Veerappa, Rajasree, and Sachu, credited as Kumari Saraswathi. The film, produced by Sarodi Brothers, had a musical score by K. V. Mahadevan and was released on 19 April 1963. Hence they are coming to Earth to identify and take a talented artiste who could teach their denizens music and dance. As they near Earth, one of the aliens, Thinna, the commander-in-chief of their planet, switches on a monitor, and the screen shows music and dance performances in various parts of Earth. Chand Par Chadayee (1967)

Chaand Par Chadie. Indian Space Movie.

Chand Par Chadayee (Trip To Moon) is one of India’s earliest sci-fi films. It was directed by T.P. Sundaram and starred muscleman Dara Singh and the smoking-hot Helen. Although this was filmed in 1967, one could easily guess it to be much older because of the ultra-crude effects and visual style. Fans of Ed Wood will be amazed by the spaceships and spacesuits displayed here. Like all Indian films, it has plenty of singing and dancing. Astronaut Anand (Dara Singh) is on a mission to the moon. Before his rocket can be launched, he is attacked by moon men, who will stop at nothing to prevent his mission. They abduct Anand and take him prisoner on their spaceship. After escaping from

the moon men, Anand fights King Kong, cow dinosaurs (!)Cyclops, Medusa, space rhinos, robots, and moon minions. This is recommended to fans of psychotronic films and cult cinema. It’s in unsubtitled Hindi but never mind that.

Mission Mangal (2019)

Mission Mangal: Indian Space Movie.

The Film Mission Mangal (English: “Mission Mars”) is a 2019 Indian Hindi-language drama film directed by Jagan Shakti and produced by Cape of Good Films, Hope Productions, Fox Star Studios, Aruna Bhatia, and Anil Naidu, loosely based on the life of scientists at the Indian Space Research Organisation who contributed to India’s first interplanetary expedition Mars Orbiter Mission. It stars Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan, Sonakshi Sinha, Taapsee Pannu, Nithya Menen, Kirti Kulhari, and Sharman Joshi in lead roles alongside H. G. Dattatreya, Vikram Gokhale, Dalip Tahil, Sanjay Kapoor and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub amongst others in supporting roles.

Across the landscapes of Bengaluru, at ISRO, after the failed launch of GSLV-F06 on 25 December 2010, due to a miscalculation by Project Director Tara Shinde (Vidya Balan), Rakesh Dhawan (Akshay Kumar), a fellow scientist working with her, takes the blame for the mistake. As a result, he is relocated to work on Mangalyaan (Mars-craft) as punishment, where Tara joins him out of guilt. The new GSLV missions are given to Rupert Desai, a NASA scientist of Indian origin. The Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) is thought of as an impossible mission by his coworkers due its aim of reaching Mars with its tight budget.

Rakesh learns that the MOM cannot take off on the PSLV since the available technology has a payload of only 1500 kg and not enough fuel to fire the rocket to be carried to a distance of almost 55 million kilometers. GSLV, if it had succeeded, could have taken the satellite to Mars as it had a payload of 2300 kg. However, recent significant failures of GSLV have jeopardized the planned future missions.

Cargo (2019)

Cargo: Indian Space Movie.

Debutante director Arati Kadav’s homegrown science-fiction film Cargo, picked up by Netflix after playing at MAMI and almost playing at SXSW, is an innovative but inert mashup of Eastern ideas and Western storytelling. Like Masaan by way of Moon, Cargo is a film that explores themes such as reincarnation — or, more accurately, the corporatization of reincarnation — and caste, all coated in a layer of slick modern sci-fi.

But while it might seem refreshingly original here, in an industry that has mostly stayed away from the genre, Cargo could feel massively derivative to specific audiences. Moon, for instance, is a film whose influence can be felt in virtually every scene. Moreover, Vikrant Massey’s character, a ‘rakshasa’ named Prahastha, is having the same existential crisis, slowly consuming Sam Rockwell’s miner in Duncan Jones’ film.
