Ring Fit Adventure

Ring Fit Adventure

Expected release date: October 18, 2019

Ring Fit Adventure is Nintendo’s next big endeavor into the exercising genre of video games. The game will be released for the Nintendo Switch and will use two new accessories: the Ring-Con and Leg Strap.

The initial trailer for Ring Fit Adventure was released on September 05, 2019, and was very cryptic. It showed clips of people all over the world using the new peripherals, but it gave no context.

The second trailer was released on September 12, 2019, and gave a lot more information.

This trailer revealed the name of the two accessories seen in the first video: the Ring-Con and Leg Strap. Each accessory had a slot where you can attach a Joy-Con. The Ring-Con looks like a pilates ring, but the female host says, “This isn’t just any ring. It’s actually an electronic device that senses and reacts to your movements. It’ll turn physical force into powerful attacks.” The Leg Strap senses your lower body movements. You can calibrate the Ring-Con to match your level of activity. The female host then explains what the game is about. “…an evil bodybuilding dragon named Drago throws the world into chaos. This world needs your help, and there’s a lot of it to save.

You need to jog in place to move forward. Squeeze the Ring-Con to create a powerful blast, and aim the blast downward to jump. The trailer then shows to example guide using various movements with the Ring-Con to paddle, fly, and roll. You will use “fit skills” to defeat the enemies. There are over 40 fit skills in four different categories. Red skills use arm muscles, yellow skills use core muscles, blue skills use leg muscles, and green skills are based on yoga poses. Each enemy is colored to tell you which skill to use. You get a damage bonus when using the right skill on the enemies. You can press the Ring-Con into your abs to create a shield to reduce the damage you receive from enemy attacks. You can level up to increase your stats and gain more fit skills.

Quick Play allows you to quickly jump in and do a variety of exercises. This trailer showed off three different modes of Quick Play: Simple, Minigames, and Sets. Simple targets specific muscle groups. You must do the specified move as many times as you can in 20 seconds. Minigames are short games where you aim for a high score. Sets allow you to choose a set of exercises based on a specific muscle group.

There is also a Silent Mode where you can keep your legs moving without making too much noise. This would be helpful if you are in an apartment, or if you want to exercise when your family is sleeping.

The third trailer mostly goes over the same information as the previous trailer, but it adds a few more details. Coins and ingredients are hidden throughout the courses. The ingredients can be used to make smoothies that can be used in battle. You can visit shops in towns and purchase clothing. You can complete villagers’ requests and redeem rewards. This trailer reveals a new mode: Multitask mode. This mode allows you to exercise at any time by using the Ring-Con to exercise off-screen. The game tracks each press of the Ring-Con. It shows a woman doing some presses against her shoulder while watching sports. You will earn bonus experience when you return to the game.

Ring Fit Adventure could be Nintendo’s next fitness hit after Wii Fit. This will be a big test for them. If it goes well, they might make new peripherals to use with the Nintendo Switch. They may also make more fitness games to use with the Ring-Con and Leg Strap. Personally, I don’t know if I will play this game. It looks interesting, but I feel like it is a little too gimmicky for me. What are your thoughts? Do you plan on playing Ring Fit Adventure? Drop me a comment and let me know.
