One of the most significant aspects of the film is its depiction of a black hole. A region of space-time where gravity is so strong that nothing can escape, not even light. The film’s black hole, Gargantua, is based on the scientific calculations and theories of renowned physicist Kip Thorne. He served as an executive producer and consultant. Thorne collaborated with the VFX team at Double Negative to create a realistic and accurate simulation of a black hole using a new renderer called The Worm Renderer.
The Interstellar VFX team worked on rendering the black hole for more than two years, using hundreds of computers and terabytes of data. The rendering process was so complex and intensive that it revealed new insights into the physics of black holes, such as the phenomenon of gravitational lensing, which causes light to bend around the black hole and create multiple images of distant stars. The VFX team also discovered that the accretion disk, the glowing ring of gas and dust around the black hole, would appear asymmetrical and warped due to the extreme gravity and rotation of the black hole. The VFX team published their findings in scientific journals and shared their data with other researchers.
