Dauntless – Fortune & Glory Update
It has now been a week since the Dauntless Fortune & Glory update (Patch OB 0.9.0). I was looking forward to seeing what the Trials had in store. Unfortunately, I am just short of being able to compete in the Trials. Apparently, in order to participate in Trials, you have to have hunted Shrowd and Rezakiri. I have them unlocked, but I need to do quite a bit more grinding to get my radiant and umbral armor up before I can hunt them. I wasn’t able to play very much this past week, but I was able to check out some of the new changes.
The Fortune & Glory Hunt Pass
The first thing I did after booting up Dauntless was to check out the new Hunt Pass. The free rewards are decent looking. I actually prefer them to the Elite track (the paid version of the Hunt Pass). The very first reward of the Elite track is the only reward I have any interest in – the pirate outfit. The shark tooth lantern skin (reward #10) is actually pretty cool looking, but I have no interest in skins for the lantern. Overall, the weapon skins look too…fishy. There are too many barbs and hooks. I get it…pirates are on the ocean, which means fish. But when someone says “pirate”, I don’t immediately think fish. I think treasure, gold, big sails, skulls and crossbones, anchors, ships, cannons, rum, Jack Sparrow, etc. Not fish. The axe skin actually looks like an anchor, and it looks alright. The repeater skins are not showing up in the store previews, so I cannot get a good look at them. The Hunt Pass is definitely underwhelming. However, the new items in the store that can be purchased outright look better than the Hunt Pass skins. These skins make the weapons look like they are made from bones. The new Dread Skulls look like behemoth skulls and have replaced Death Marks as a way to level the Hunt Pass in the city.
Unfortunately, the war pike is still broken in this update. The stored ammo is shooting two shots at once, and sometimes the ammo icon appears even when no ammo is stored. The good news is that I have been working on updating my chain blades, and I am enjoying playing with them.
With a new update comes new issues. Due to issues with the Trials currency (called Marks), Lady Luck’s shop was temporarily closed down (it wasn’t down for too long, though). This was just one issue with Trials. Apparently, Trials has been riddled with bugs. There is a public leaderboard that posts the top scores from Trials. One glitch has allowed people to have an incorrect (fast) time posted on the leaderboards. There was another glitch where a regular behemoth could spawn in the Trial, and the time to beat that behemoth would be counted on the leaderboard.
A new, big issue is the audio cutting out on consoles. I witnessed this glitch myself very quickly. After one or two hunts, I could only hear certain background SFX. The audio seemed to disappear bit by bit after each hunt. Eventually, I could hear nothing at all during my hunts.
The team has been working on these bugs, and they have already fixed some of them.
Due to the above glitches, it seems that Trials may not have been ready for launch. I am glad to hear that I didn’t miss too much by not being able to play. I thought Trials would just be another difficult challenge. Like Heroic hunts, but with the behemoths being modified to have traits of the other behemoths. But after reading about the difficulty of Trials, it seems like it may be more like late endgame content. Like something only those who have maxed out their armor sets completely could take on. This may not be the case exactly, but I know I have a long way to go before I can compete in the Trials.
Overall, this update was underwhelming to me. The “pirate” them doesn’t seem to come through in the Elite Hunt Pass, so I would have no interest in purchasing it. I like pirates, so I was hoping for more pirate decor and rewards. I know I have a lot to grind if I want to compete in Trials, which makes it a new goal I can work toward. However, my friends that I had been playing Dauntless with have moved on to other games. I know I can matchmake and continue playing Dauntless myself, but the motivation to play isn’t the same as it was a few weeks ago. However, I do feel like I will come back to Dauntless every now and then, between other games and shows. It isn’t at the top of the list of games I want to play at the moment anymore. Regardless, Dauntless is a pretty good free-to-play game, and I have gotten several hours of fun out of it. There are quite a few glitches, but it has still provided good entertainment for me and my friends. Definitely check it out if you haven’t already. Again, it is a free game, so you don’t have anything to lose by trying it out.
